Passing of Prof Lovell Fernandez
The African-German Research Network for Transnational Criminal Justice notes with great sadness the passing away of Prof Lovell Fernandez.
Prof Fernandez was a leading scholar in the field of transitional justice, who established many international contacts for his faculty, including partnership agreements with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin from 1995.
He played a crucial role in creating the South African-German Centre for Transnational Criminal Justice in 2008, a centre of excellence funded by the German Academic Exchange Service, in collaboration with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He served as the UWC Director of this programme until his retirement in 2015. Subsequently, he was acting Director for a transitional period until 2017 and continued with his teaching in the fields of economic crimes and transitional justice. He was very popular with his students over all these years. As one of the Alumni put it, he was a law professor who loved his students and treated them with honesty and compassion.
His death is a huge loss to us all. We are filled with grieve by his death and would like to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Michaela and his children, also on behalf of the Alumnae and Alumni of the Centre and the Advisory Board of the African-German Research Network.
