Lunch Talk | Why the CEDAW-Committee Matters | Brenda Akia | 7 July 2023, 12:00 CET | Online
After an excellent lecture and fruitful discussion at our second presentation, we are glad to announce the third lunch lecture of the African-German Research Network for 2023.
On 7 July 2023 (12:00 CET), Brenda Akia will speak on the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW-Committee). Brenda is an alumna of the AGRN and graduated in 2011 with an LL.M. in Transitional Justice. She is currently a member of the UN-Committee (term 2023-2026) and was recently awarded a Diamond Jubilee Medal by the President of Uganda. Brenda is a laureate of Franco-German Peace and Reconciliation Award as well as of the Women4Women Human Rights Award for her outstanding work and dedication in promoting women’s rights, gender equality, and female empowerment globally.
As the first Ugandan elected to the Committee, Brenda will provide insights into its structure, working methods and objectives, and share her personal experiences of working in the Committee. She will also address the question of why the CEDAW-Committee is so important.
